Big Broadsword Circle Movement

The big broadsword circle ( wu hua da ) is one of the most basic sword techniques and can be seen in every modern and most traditional broadsword forms. This video focuses on the sword movement. Depending on your wushu instructor or your personal style you can move the left hand slightly different. However, the most basic form is raising the arm when the sword moves towards the left side of your trunk and then let your left hand sink down next to your right eye when you swing the sword back.

Sanda Fighting Stance

In this video lesson you will learn how to do a sanda fighting stance. Performed by Li Xin from the Sanda - 1 - Competition Team of the Song Jiang Wushu School.
Stand on the balls of your feet and bend your knees slightly. The distance between the feet is a bit more than one shoulder with. Keep the weight 50 percent on the back leg and 50 percent on the front leg. Don't lean forward, don't lean back. Don't bend your knees to one side. Stand centered. Round your back slightly and keep your abs contrated a little. Keep your shoulders relaxed and let your elbows hang. Don't lift your elbows because if you do, your opponent could kick you in the ribs. The back hand stays close to the chin and the shoulder protects the other side of your head. However, keep in mind that you should not lift you shouders too much. ( keep shoulders relaxed ) Bend your head down a little bit, but keep looking straight forward at the same time. ( actually stare straight forward ) The elbows are bent about 90 degrees and the fists are closed. Fists close but not cramped. ( if you cramp your fists, your punches will became slow and stiff.

Left Right Combination

This video shows how to combine front hand hook punch and back hand straight punch ( left right combination ) . The front hand hook punch is usually thrown first. Watch the hip movement in the first punch. Keep your right hand close to your chin to protect your head. Then throw a back hand punch, which is even stronger ( back hand punches are stronger, but because the distance to the impact is longer, it's easier see them coming ) . Watch the hip movement and the back leg when Li Xin throws the second punch. Now the left hand is close to the chin.

    Sanda Front Kick

    Sanda Front Kick
The sanda front kick is very similar to the front kick of other matial arts such as karate, thaiboxing or tae kwon do. Start from your fighting stance and lift your knee close to the chest. The higher you lift the knee, the higher you can kick. However, sanda is not about high front kick. Sanda is all about fast and powerful leg techniques ( height is not very important ). Then extend your leg and kick your opponent with the ball of the foot ( not with the heel or the tip of the toe ). It's very important that you push your hips forward and lean slightly back shortly before the impact. This way the kick is faster, reach is better and the kick becomes stronger. Not pushing the hips forward is wrong technique and makes it very easy for your opponent to counter attack ( especially as your head will be very close to the reach of his fists ). This sounds simple, but actually the right timing for this hip push is hard to find. Another thing you can do for better reach is hopping farward as you kick ( only do a very small hop at the beginning ). Then pull your foot back and bring your knee back to your opper body. Don't lust let your leg fall. If you get used to pulling the foot back in a straight horizontal line, you opponent will never be able to grab your leg. Your leg wil literally slip out of his hands... ahmmm... I mean gloves. Practice the front kick with kick pads like shown in the video or work on a heavy bag.

Leg Grab Whirl Throw - Sanda Xuan Shuai

The leg grab whirl throw ( in chinese: xuan shuai ) is a circular leg throw often applied after a slow thrusted kick ( especially side kicks and front kicks ). Grab your opponents leg with your arms. Hold the foot between biceps and trunk and press the glove of the other hand on top ( see video ). Practice how to grab your opponents leg with gloves on. Next you have to get used to your opponents movements. If you move forward, your opponent will move towards you. If he doesn't, you will easily push him off the platform and get 3 points. So you push, stop, push, pull, etc. Just don't let his leg go. Whenever he tries to balance out his position, you pull his foot down to the floor and to the left. This should happen when he hops ( he will have to hop, beause he only stands on one leg ). For this throw your timing has to be perfect and of cause it only works if your were able to grab one of your opponents slow kicks. Keep in mind that you don't have your hands free. If your opponent bends his knee and comes too close, better sweep him.

    Straight Sanda Punches

In this lesson you will learn how to throw straight sanda punches. Fist you have to stand in a good fighting stance, bring your arms and elbows in the right position and look staight forward. At the begining you should practice this without hopping or walking around. For more info on how to do a sanda fighting stance, check the fighting stance video. When you punch, you have to twist your fist, so that the back hand points up at the end. Twist your fist at the end of the punch and not at the beginning. Your fist should touch the opponent when your elbow is 80% extended. If you hit your opponent to early or too late, the impact will not be very hard. Extend your shoulder as you punch and keep your chin down and the other hand close to the head ( for protection ). Also use your hips and twist a little on the ball of the foot to put more power into your punch. Don't lean foward too much or you will lose control. In China beginners practice straight punches in front of mirrors for weeks before they start walking and punching. When you throw a front hand punch, twist a little on the ball of the front foot. If you throw a back hanf punch, twist on the ball of the back foot. Later you can try to punch while stepping forward ( increases reach and power ). However, there is an additional lesson for this.

    Sanda - Leggrab Hookthrow

The leg grab hook throw ( in chinese: bao tui gou shuai ) is a sanda throw where you grab your opponents leg and then sweep his leg. You can apply this technique after a side kick or a front kick. Grab your opponents leg like shown in the video. One hand under the leg and push with the glove of the other hand on top of his ankle. Then move forward and hook his thigh close to the hip area ( shoulders close to opponents trunk ). Stand up a little and hook / sweep his standing leg. The only moment where your opponent could counter-attack you is when you move forward ( you don't have your hands free but he can punch you ).

    Side and Front Kick Defense

This video show defenses against side and front kicks. Side and front kicks are straight, thrusted kicks, that's why you escape to one side instead of hopping backwards. Roundhouse kicks on the other side are circular kicks and therefore, defense techniques are different.

    1. Escape to the left or the right and block the kick with your arm ( see video ). Then counter attack or just keep going.
    2. You can also grab your opponents leg and throw or sweep him.
    3. If your opponent kicks head height, you can't grab his leg, but you can still block and counter-attack or apply another throw ( where your don't grab the foot ).
