Swing your whip under your right leg and start turning to the left, so that the direction of the whip changes form vertical to horizontal. Then lift your left leg and swing your whip in a big circle and let it land on your left arm. At this point you can also make a little jump or lift your left leg like if you were doing a circular kick or a side kick. End position: Bow Stance

Empty Stance Whip Catch

Empty Stance Whip Catch - Wushu Whip Chain

This video shows how to do an empty stance whip catch ( in chinese: Xu Bu Liang Bian ). This catch can also be done in a bow stance or standing on one leg. I will only talk about the movement of your whip chain here. Swing your whip chain forward down on the right side of your body and swing it over your back, over your left shoulder. Then let the top of your chain fall over your left palm and stomp the right foot down ( not shown in the video ). Then go into a xubu, a gongbu or a another stance. Before you try this, you should learn the empty circle and the left-right circle.

Big Whip Chain Front Swing

Big Whip Chain Front Swing - Wushu Jiujiebian

This video shows how to do a big whip chain front swing ( kui hua ). Start from an empty circle or a left right circle an swing the whip over your bent right arm under your elbow. Then turn to the left and do the same thing the other way around ( no walking steps ). A lot of people give the whip an extra kick with the fingers of the right left hand when they turn back to the right, but you should be able to do this with the right elbow only ( it's easier and faster with the help of the left hand ). The whip makes one circle on each side - then turn back. Do this as fast as you can, stand upright and look straight forward. Make sure you swing your whip in vertical layers and don't hit your legs - Stand with the right foot in front of the left.

Mix some Double Whip Chain Basics

Whenever an intersection is too difficult, do a couple of disparate circles or move the whips as slow as possible. This is just an example, so you don't have to copy all the moves form this video. Learn the basics before you try to combine them.

Axilla Whip - Wushu Shuangbian

Axilla Whip - Wushu Shuangbian

This video shows how to do an axilla whip circle ( in chinese: ye xia bian ). This technique is very similar to the disparate double whip chain circle. The difference is that the right whip is swung from the axilla and not from the hand. Just start with a disparate double whip chain circle and catch the right chain under your shoulder ( between arm and trunk ). Keep swinging both whips and hop forward on your left leg. This is not a very popular double whip chain skill, but it's funny and not very hard to learn. Before you try this, you should just learn the disparate double whip circle.

Double Whip Chain Neck Wind Turn

Double Whip Chain Neck Wind Turn

This video shows how to do a neck wind turn. The neck wind turn is similar to the neck wind, only that you keep both whips on the same side of the body and turn around 180 degrees. What makes this difficult is that the whips often hit each other when you turn around. Of course you should learn the normal neck wind and how to turn around with 2 whip chains before you try this technique.

Double Back Whip - Shuang Bei Bian

Double Back Whip - Shuang Bei Bian

This video shows how to do a double back whip ( shuang bai bian ) to the left side. This technique is used to turn around. At the beginning you do big front swings and after turning around you are doing a big back swings. Doing disparate front and back circles instead of the big double whip chain circles makes the intersections a bit easier. When you turn to the left, the right whip chain goes under your shoulder and the left one passes on the left side of the left arm. Make sure you don't let the left whip circle on the left side more than once ( your chains would hit each other ). Before you try this you should learn the back whip ( bei bian ) with one whip chain. Practice both, left and right side of this technique. This video only shows the left side.

Disparate Double Whip Circles - Wushu Shuangbian

Disparate Double Whip Circles - Wushu Shuangbian

Disparate double whip circles ( shuang fan bian ) are very useful for beginners. You can do them before and after most skills to make intersections easier. You can do them forwards or backwards, depending on the skill that follows. If you want to do big double whip back swings for example, start with disparate double whip back circles. If you are preparing for the big front swing, start from disparate front circles. This way it's easier to keep the chains under control. Just make sure you swing your whip chains in parallel, vertical layers and keep the circles 180 degrees disparate. This video only shows disparate back circles.
