Lotus Kick

This video shows the old lotus kick ( teng kong bai lian ). Now everybody practiced the standing lotuskick ( plus exta rotations ) and most wushu schools don't even have the 1-legged lotus kick in their warmup routine. I personally think that the old was much cooler and hope the IWUF will bring it back soon. Performed by Lu Peng Cheng from the Song JIang Wushu School. Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach ).

Big Broadsword Circle Movement

The big broadsword circle ( wu hua da ) is one of the most basic sword techniques and can be seen in every modern and most traditional broadsword forms. This video focuses on the sword movement. Depending on your wushu instructor or your personal style you can move the left hand slightly different. However, the most basic form is raising the arm when the sword moves towards the left side of your trunk and then let your left hand sink down next to your right eye when you swing the sword back.

Frontflip Backcrash - Wushu Ditangquan

This video shows a frontflip backcrash ( ke zi shuai di ). Ke zi is the frontflip and shuai di means "fall floor". This is much easier than a normal front flip. Of course you should try the landing on soft mats first. There is an animated tutorial for this skill, so check it for more detailed instuctions. The legs touch the floor first, than the forearms and finally the upper back. There is a little mistake in this viedo... The lower back should not touch the floor. In kids wushu it doesn't make a big difference, but if you are older and try this on hard ground, you should keep your hips and your head off the ground.

BTW... Your legs touch the floor first. !!! Land on the balls of your feet and make sure the ground is not too sticky, because your feet should slip a little forward !!! And don't try this without shoes !!!

Wushu Headspring

Learn how to do a wushu headspring ( tou ding fan ). This is a traditional wushu ditang skill. The video shows both, headspring with and without hands. For more info goto wushu - ditang - headspring and check the animated tutorial.

Headspring: If you want to get higher headsprings, try to lift your arms aligned with your upper body. Few wushu people do this variation, but it's quite interesting for those who also do gymnastics.

Headspring without hands: Plant your head as straight as possible and keep your neck muscles contracted. Don't plant your head without hand-support right away. You should use your hands and then gradually release pressure from your hands ( ever several weeks ). Don't try this if your headsprings with hands are not perfect. As a preparation for this skill learn the headstand without hands ( leaning against a wall or free ). There is an animated tutorial for the headstand in the breakdance section. Same thing again: Release pressure from your hands gradually, not at once !!!

Flying Crossleg Kick 360 & 720

This video shows a 360 and a 720 Flying crossleg kick ( teng kong pan tui ). These are ditangquan difficulties and before you try them, you should be able land a proper whirlwind kick. When you first try this, jump onto mats or into a sandpit. The landing is on the right leg ( slips ) and on the forearms. Avoid falling on your hips or elbows. You can find a detailed instruction at wushu-ditang. There are also 540 flying crossleg kicks ( I will post an additional video this month - may 2008 ). 540 Crossleg Kicks are landed differently, but the take-off is the same.
