Round-off to backflip with extended knees.
When you look close, you will notice that the knees are fully extended, but the ankles are flexed.
Looks funny and makes the whole thing kinda unique.
The guy doing this is "La Mosca" from pequenosmandingueiros.8m.com.
I taped this in La Paz - Bolivia.

Edil from pequenosmandingueiros.8m.com doing a Macaco. The macaco can be used to learn the back handspring if you are too afraid of going backwards. Plant one hand first and then push your hips up. Plant the hand like shown in the video, or you will injure your shoulders and your elbows. If you want to learn the back handspring from the macaco, it will take you a while to get your handsprings straight afterwards. However, the macaco is not an exercise for the back handsring. It is a traditional capoeira technique which also ;quot;CAN;quot; be used to learn the back handspring.

"La Mosca" from pequenosmandingueiros.8m.com doing a really nice moonsault.
For those who don't know the difference between a moonsault and a backflip layout: When you do a backflip layout, you have to keep your entire body straight and when you do a moonsault, you hollow your back in the air.
Moonsaults are very popular in XMA, capoeira, wushu etc.
Layouts are typical gymnastics skills.

Cartwheel without Hands - Twist

This video shows how to do cartwheel without hands twist ( in chinese: Ce Kong Fan - Zhuan ti ). This skill is also called aerial twist and hypertwist. There are 2 ways of learning this skill.

1) Do a butterfly Twist without the butterfly runup and swing the right leg higher than to horizontal level ( easier way )

2) Learn the front whel and then twist ( much harder, but looks much better ).

I recommend you learn the b-twist variation first and then work on your front whip and straighten the technique. At the beginning make sure you have a soft landing area ( a sand pit, a gymnastics pit with foam cubes or jump into water ).

Performed by Lu Peng Cheng from the Song Jiang Wushu School.

Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach ) .

This video shows how to do a butterfly twist. In gymnastics this is called tong bei and in capoeira mariposa com giro. Before you try the butterfly twist, your butterfly kick should be pretty good. The runup for the b-twist and the b-kick are the same. The difference is that when you do a butterfly kick, your keep your arms wide open and when you do a butterfly twist, you close your hands in front of your chest or your abs. It is very important that you swing our right leg up very high and don;#039;t bend the knee. The higher you swing the right leg, the more horizontal you will twist. The butterfly twist should be somewhere between 45 degrees and horizontal. Everythng higher than horizontal is considered a cartwheel without hands with twist. Performed by Song Long Yong, Lu Peng Cheng and Yang Jia Le from the Song Jiang Wushu School China. Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach ).

How to Spot a Cartwheel without Hands

This video shows how to spot a cartwheel without hands. Actually it is something between butterfly kick and cartwheel without hands, so you can also use it to spot a kids butterfly kick. Only use this spotting technique on somebody who is much lighter than you, because most of his weight will be on your right arm for a short moment.

Dangers: I personally don't like this spotting technique because:
a) The student gets used to a slanted cartwheel without hands. That's because at the beginning he does a butterfly kick over your hand. I personally perfer putting the left hand on his neck, so that the cartwheel becomes really really straight. But that's something you need even more timing for and your student should not be afraid of cartwheels without hands at all.
b) you have to be careful with your students head.
He might hit his head on your left knee.

Whenever somebody asks me about the cartwheel wthout hands I recommend a wooden springboard and a sandpit. Work on left-handed cartwheels first and plant the left hand as late as possibe. This way your cartwheel will become really really staight.

I don't recommend somebody who never did a cartwheel without hands or similar acrobatics to spot a beginner with this spotting technique. You have to know how and when he moves his arms. Timing is very important.

However, this is a spotting technique used in wushu and you can use it to spot a cartwheel wthout hands if your student can already do a butterfly kick. So if you have a student who urges to learn the cartwheel without hands, you should consider to use this spotting technique ( you can make his cartwheel straigher later )

Performed by Lu Peng Cheng and Yang Jia Le from the Song Jiang Wushu School. Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach sj-wushu school )

This video shows a reverse butterflytwist. Normally you jump off from the left leg, twist 360° and land on the left leg. This butterflytwist is done the other way around. Jump from the right leg - Land on the right leg. Before you try this, you should learn the normal butterfly twist from the left leg and of course the butterfly kick. ( without twist ) I taped this 2007 with the capoeira group:;quot;pequenosmandingueiros.8m.com;quot; in La Paz Bolivia. In capoeira language this is called ;quot;PIRULITO REVERSO;quot; Pirulite = Butterflytwist.

Here a short wushu horse stance instructions. ( in chinese: ma bu ) Stand with your feet about 3 ft apart and keep your feet parallel. Keep your upper body pretty upright and look straight forward. Now put your fists on zour waist or extend your hands in front of zour chest. The thighs should be parallel to the floor ( in modern wushu hand and weapon styles ). Try to hold your horse stance for a few minutes. This was taped by Mavi at the Song Jian Wushu School.
Learn how to do a butterfly kick ( in chinese: xuan zi ). Run forward and then turn around like shown in the video and open your arms. Bend your upper body down and swing your arms. Then swing your head forward and to the left and swing your right leg up at the same time ( keep the knee as straight as possible ). Kick the right leg up ( ideally higher than hip height ), look straight forward ( not to the floor ) and open your arms. If you would close your arms, you would go for a butterfly twist ( or something between kick and twist - which is not good ). Land on the right leg. Work on your butterfly kicks when you have problems with the height of your butterfly twists. Try to combine 2 or more butterfly kicks and/or twists. The butterfly kick runup and the buttefly twist runup are the same. Performed by Song Long Yong from the Song Jiang Wushu School. Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach ).

This video shows a roundoff flashkick performed by Song Long Yong from the Song Jiang Wushu School. You can jump off like for a moonsault or a backflip layout and then spread the legs. The landing can be kinda tough for the ankle ( becasue one lgs touches the floor first ), so try this with landing mats first and make sure you don;#039;t relax your abs too much when you land. This flip is popular in wushu, capoeira and extreme martial arts ( tricking ). Most gymnasts don;#039;t practice flashkicks.

How to spot a Back Handspring

In this lesson you will learn how 1 person can spot a back handspring. To apply this spotting technique you don't have to be an experienced gymnastics coach. If your son or daughter wants to learn the back handspring, you can learn this spotting technique even if you don't have a clue about gymnatics. You will earn how to spot faster than your student will learn the back handspring. Just make sure your student can hold a handstand without help for about 3 seconds before you try this. Only do this on mats, because you don't want to injure your kids wrists and be aware that you will have to carry the enire body weight of the person who wants to learn the back handspring. So ask somebody else to learn this spotting technique if you have back problems.

In case the text in the video is too small...

Put your right arm around your students back and the right hand on his hip. The left hand is behind his knee or hamstring. Your stance should be pretty wide and I recommend you stand on the left side of your student. Then the student squats down and leans agains your right arm like if he was sitting on a chair. The upper body and the shins hould be vertical now. The arms should be extended in front of the chest and he should look straight forward. The back is slightly roundsd.

Then the student extends his knees and aligns his arms with the trunk and the head. He basically lies down on your hands ( at hip height ). Carry him back and put him into a handstand position ( careful with the hands ). Finally the studends puts his feet bak down.
The student should not swing his arms or the upper body when he jumps off. He should also not move his knees forward or jump from the balls of the foot. A back handspring is jumped from the flat foot sole. A back flip is jumped from the balls of the foot.

Speed up and help less every time.
It might take a couple of weeks until your student can do a back handspring without hands. Even then keep standing close to your students and find ways to spot him with one hand. Dont let him do a back handspring on hard ground for at leat 2 month.

This is a tutorial on how 1 person can spot a back handspring. It can be used do learn the back handspring, imrove posture or make ones back handsprings wider. Other spotting techniques are: Back Handspring Roll,
2-Person-Spotting, The Capoeira Macaco or learning the back handspring from extreme back-flexibility.

This one is the best spotting technique I know and the most difficult one is the one is from back-flexibility.
Please keep in mind that you have to be strong enough to lift your student in front of you, so there is no way a 50 KG person can spot a 100 KG person.

This back handspring tutorial is for spotting the back handspring. For the right technique, check the animated tutorial. < Click Here >

This tutorial was taped at the Song Jiang Wushu School, but I had to show them first. Wushu back handsprings are usually spotted with 2 persons. ( Wushu back handsprings are shorter ). For a tutorial on how 2 persons can spot a back handspring, Click Here.

How to spot a Butterfly Twist

In this lesson you will learn how to spot a buttefly twist ( xuan zi 360 ). This spotting technique only works for kids or somebody who weights much less than you. First of all, the students butterfly kick should be pretty decent. Hold your students left hand with your left hand and his right hand with your right hand. The arms should be crossed like shown in the video above. Make sure students right arm is under his left arm and not the other way around. Step forward with the same speed and timing your students steps forward and let him jump off from the left leg.
He has to swing up his right leg like if he were doing a normal butterfly kick ( just without the circuar-down-motion of the upper body ). The student just has to take care of kicking the right leg high enough and closing the legs in mid-air. You will do the rest for him. As soon as he jumps off, pull his right arm up. This initiates the rotation. Make sure you let him twist horizontally. Twisting vertically is very dangerous. At mid-air, release his arms. If you hold his left arm too long, you might block his rotation or even dislocate his shoulder. Let your student fall on a huge pile of mats. Make sure he closes his fists as soon as you release him and let him land with closed legs on the mat pile. At the beginning just jet him hop a few inches, pull a litte and let him fall on his back. Make sure he closes his legs at this point. Keep in mind that this spotting technique is pretty dangerous and you should not try it with somebody who is very far from doing a butterfly twist or proper wushu jumps. You can also use this spotting technique to make your students butterfly twist more horizontal or improve timing of his twist.
However, Flash Mavi doesn't take any responibility for using training methods like this. Read the Terms of Service. Keep it safe and use mats... Lots of mats.

Performed by Yang Jia Le and Song Long Yang from the Song jiang Wushu School. Coach: Wang Guang Ming ( wushu head coach )

In this video you will see some Ce Kong Fan ( cartwheel without hands ) variations. On the first view all of them look the same, but if you look closer you will see that all are slightly different. Some people for example like to bounce from the ball of the foot, while others roll over the heel. Another difference you can see is the arm-swing. For detailed instruction on how to do this jump, click the FM button and check the animated tutorial. ( wushu section )

Buttefly Combo

A butterfly combo is when you do 2 or more butterfly kicks in a row. Don;#039;t do any steps in-between the jumps. What;#039;s important about combining butterfly kicks is that you have to keep swinging the upper body in a wide motion after every jump. At the beginning just try to do 2 butterfly kicks in a row. Later you can try 3 or more b-kicks and finish off with a b-twist. Performed by Song Long Yong from the Song Jiang Wushu School. Coach Wang Guang Ming ( wushu competition team ).
